Hershey’s Better Basket Blog Hop

March 18th, 2010 by Rose DesRochers · 3 Comments

Anne of Anneonlife has given me a virtual Easter basket. This isn’t your ordinary Easter basket or your typical blog meme.

The basket Anne gave me is part of the ‘Hershey’s Better Basket Blog Hop,’ a pay it forward movement.

When you join the “Hershey’s Better Basket Blog Hop,’ and pass this Easter basket along you’re helping to raise money for the ‘Children’s Miracle Network.’

The ‘Children’s Miracle Network’ is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals, medical research and community awareness of children’s health issues.

This Easter Hershey’s Chocolate has partnered with the Children’s Miracle Network.

Hershey’s is generously donating $10, up to a total of $5,000 for each blog post that is written about the ‘Hershey’s Better Basket Blog Hop’ by April 4th, 2010 to the Children’s Miracle Network.

I have no doubt Hershey’s will meet its goal as long as one person accepts, then the next, and so on. 🙂 Thank you, Rose!

Without denigrating the admirable and worthy intentions of people participating in this initiative, I have to say I have a problem with commercial organisations and their so called “corporate social responsibility” programs.

What you’ll find, in most cases, is that the money spent by the organisation on the CSR program is outweighed a hundred fold or more, by increased sales of the organisation’s products as a result.

They’re only in it to boost brand recognition.

Is that a problem? Yes, because more money could be raised more efficiently without the involvement of the commercial organisation.

I admit freely that I have not studied this particular initiative of Hershey’s. I’m generalising. But the question you’ve always got to ask in these matters is, “What’s in it for the shareholders?” Because the commercial organisation is not doing it out of the goodness of its heart — it doesn’t have a heart.
