Rose DesRochers interviews Ron Callari about his new book Facebucks & Dumb F*cks

Ron Callari, social media blogger for InventorSpot.com is a freelance journalist and editorial cartoonist whose work has been published on AlterNet, CounterPunch and the Sacramento News Review.

Today I had the privilege of speaking to Ron Callari via an email interview about his new book “Facebucks & Dumb F*cks” and the contest he has developed to coincide with the introduction of his new graphic novel.

Introducing “Facebucks & Dumb F*cks” -the first graphic novel to be written about your favorite social network.

Facebucks & Dumb F*cks"

Rose DesRochers: What made you write the book?

Ron Callari: As an advertising and marketing executive in traditional media for 20 years, I became very aware of the power of Social Media during the last three years ago, and decided to re-focus my consulting business to assist brands in this space. Coupled with this interest, I have also been an editorial cartoonist and developed a cartoon character at the turn of the century called “kidd millennnium.” Published online with several political sites, I also authored two books, where this cartoon character is featured, i.e. Uncle Dubya’s Jihad Jamboree and Crude Behavior.

Following the recent controversy Facebook is currently facing regarding ‘privacy’ issues and how the network is redefining what that means in today’s world – I decided to present my point of view on the topic from a satirical perspective in a graphic novel format – again using kidd millennium as my muse and commentator. While the book is fictional, it does tie in some of the real-life stories that have been written about Mark Zuckerberg and the origins of Facebook. The ending however will surprise most readers as it is my vision as to where social networking is going and how it will evolve in the next decade.

How well do you think the book will take off?

I would say since there is no other graphic novels on this topic, and based on the popularity of this genre, it has the capability to appeal to a wide audience and readers in all age range groups. Since the movie “The Social Network” coming out in October is taking a much more historical approach to the Zuckerberg and Facebook story, I think a humourous perspective to this subject matter is warranted and will be appreciated by the half a billion Facebook followers, currently using the network.

What’s with the title of the book- Facebucks & Dumb F*cks?

The meaning of the title of the book is twofold. Since Facebook is developing its own currency system called Facebook Credits – I thought “Facebucks” was a spot-on play on words that would underscore how this social network is growing into a multi-billion dollar enterprise. In regards to “Dumb F*cks,” this is supposedly what Mark Zuckerberg wrote in an IM message to one of his classmates at Harvard, when they asked him how we was able to attract so many followers to Facebook, so quickly. My story presents Zuckerberg as a modern-day Pied Piper leading the blind down this precarious social networking path.

Tell us about the illustrator of the book.

Marius Zavadskis, the book’s illustrator resides in Vilnius, Lithuania, While I have worked with several illustrators over the course of the last ten years, I selected Marius for this project because of his ability to interpret the story with humorous and unique visuals. Since I am based on the East Coast in the States, our only challenge in collaborating is our 7-hour time difference. But so far, I haven’t kept him up too late at night and he hasn’t awakened me too early in the AM.

Can you tell us more about the contest you are hosting?

The Win-A-Walk-On Part Contest is a crowd-sourced campaign to motivate users to update their status on Facebook, send out tweets on Twitter and/or publish a 2 minute video on YouTube. Users can become involved in all three networks or just one – it’s up to them. In the case of Facebook, they will need to become a FAN of our Facebucks & Dumb F*cks page, and for Twitter they will need to follow us at: @FacebucksBook. YouTube producers need only to send an email to roncallari@comcast.net to register their video after they have posted it.

The official Contest Rules and deadline dates can be found at the kidd millennium Web site .
