Avoid Trademark Infringement when blogging

October 25th, 2010 by Rose DesRochers · 2 Comments

Stupid is as stupid does. (A line from the movie Forrest Gump)

Are you thinking of using “for dummies in your blog” headline? Before using ‘for dummies’ in your blog post title you may want to read this post.

The Dummies series, is a registered trademark of J. Wiley & Sons, Inc. Wiley has over 100 trademark applications and registrations in the United States and other countries for the FOR DUMMIES® trademark.

Wiley requests that all blogs include the following attribution language at the end of any postings that may refer to the FOR DUMMIES® brand.

FOR DUMMIES® is a registered trademark of Wiley Publishing, Inc.

You may use WPI trademarks ( not logos) to refer specifically to WPI products. EX: Writing a review of say Blogging for Dummies. (“Your use must not mislead the public as to WPI sponsorship, affiliation or endorsement of your company, or your products or services.”)

Thinking of registering a domain name with for dummies in it?

You may not use FOR DUMMIES or derivation (EX: 4 dummies) in domain names.

My whole blog is for “dummies!” JK. There are so many hazards to writing; I’ll have to be more careful.

This is so important on many fronts. From photos to tag lines, people seem to think if it’s on the Internet, it’s free game. Not so. You can’t just take a company’s logo off their site and use it however you want! When print was the dominant method of marketing, copyright and trademark infringement was easier to spot and control. Now, not so much. Thank you for bringing this to everyone’s attention.
